Four-day Michelsmarkt with marquee, rides and musical entertainment in the historic town centre
The Michelsmarkt in Nassau owes its name to Saint Michael, whose feast day is on September 29th. Such patronal fair dates are widespread in Rhineland-Palatinate and are among the oldest folk festival traditions — many can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when market days around saints' feast days served an important economic and social purpose.
Today, the Michelsmarkt has developed into the largest event in the city. Over four days, the festival extends across the entire town centre of Nassau — from the historic market square with its medieval buildings, through the main thoroughfares, to the squares along the Lahn river. This clearly distinguishes the Michelsmarkt from many other funfair events that concentrate on a single fairground — here, the entire city becomes a festival mile.
The offerings include classic funfair elements: showmen with rides (carousel, dodgems, chain carousel, occasionally a Ferris wheel), market traders with miscellaneous goods, textiles, household items, and regional specialities. A central marquee with extensive catering forms the social hub — cover bands, dance bands, and occasional DJ sets play here throughout the evening.
The opening hours are clearly structured: Friday 25.09. from 6 p.m. with the festival opening and initial programme items; Saturday 26., Sunday 27., and Monday 28.09. from 11 a.m. with full operation. Sunday is, as experience shows, the busiest day — many families from the Lahntal and Westerwald valleys come for several hours, often combining it with a walk along the Lahn or a visit to the medieval Nassau Castle.
Admission is usually free, showmen and catering are subject to charges.
The 2026 festival continues the proven four-day concept. By activating the entire town centre, a widespread festival atmosphere is created, which is unique in the region.
The exact programme for 2026 (marquee programme, performances, family day with reduced prices) will be published by the organiser in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Opening on Friday with a keg tapping ceremony, full operation of showmen Sat-Mon, family day often on Monday with reduced ride prices, evening marquee programme daily.
Classic funfair fare: Bratwurst, spit roast, potato pancakes, fries, sweets, almonds. Marquee with draft beer, wine, cocktails. Market traders with regional specialities.
