Literary festival dedicated to Hans Fallada in his hometown in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft
The Hans Fallada Days are a three-day literary festival organized by the Hans Fallada Society e. V., based at the Hans Fallada Museum in Carwitz in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft. It is the central annual meeting point for Fallada research, Fallada readers, and the generally literature-interested public – and at the same time an open event for tourists and summer guests in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
The festival is embedded in the museum's regular summer program (Fridays at Fallada's, Sunday Matinées, Carwitz Cinema Hour) and condenses it into three days around July 21st, Fallada's birthday. Usual program items include:
With novels such as Little Man, What Now?, Once I Was a Tramp, Wolf Among Wolves, and Every Man Dies Alone, Hans Fallada is one of the most important voices in 20th-century German literature. The Hans Fallada Days in Carwitz are the central annual forum for understanding his works and biographical context – with national and increasingly international resonance.
Carwitz is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft Nature Park, in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The village has fewer than 200 inhabitants and has become a literarily distinguished travel destination thanks to the Hans Fallada Days and continuous museum work – unique in this form in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The Hans Fallada Days 2026 will take place from Friday, July 17th to Sunday, July 19th, 2026, in Carwitz in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft. The festival traditionally falls on the weekend before Hans Fallada's birthday (July 21st) and uses the Hans Fallada Museum on Bohnenwerder as the main venue.
The usual program includes: presentations of current research and new editions, readings from Fallada's works and about Fallada, a literary-musical evening, a film program as part of the Carwitz Cinema Hour, as well as walks and thematic guided tours through Carwitz.
The detailed 2026 program (with speakers, works, and schedule) will be published by the Hans Fallada Society from April 2026 on fallada.de/hft/. Registration and tickets via [email protected] or Tel. 039831 20359.
