About Hans Fallada Days

The Hans Fallada Days are the most important literary festival dedicated to Hans Fallada (1893–1947) and take place annually around his birthday (July 21st) in Carwitz – the village where the writer lived from 1933 to 1945 and wrote some of his most significant novels. Over three days, book presentations, exciting readings, a literary-musical evening, a film program, and guided tours of the town will gather around the Hans Fallada Museum on Bohnenwerder.

About

The Hans Fallada Days are a three-day literary festival organized by the Hans Fallada Society e. V., based at the Hans Fallada Museum in Carwitz in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft. It is the central annual meeting point for Fallada research, Fallada readers, and the generally literature-interested public – and at the same time an open event for tourists and summer guests in the Mecklenburg Lake District.

Concept and Program

The festival is embedded in the museum's regular summer program (Fridays at Fallada's, Sunday Matinées, Carwitz Cinema Hour) and condenses it into three days around July 21st, Fallada's birthday. Usual program items include:

  • Book presentations of current Fallada research and new editions
  • Readings from Fallada's works and about Fallada
  • Literary-musical evening in the museum garden or hall
  • Film program as part of the Carwitz Cinema Hour
  • Walks and thematic guided tours through Carwitz and the museum grounds
  • Meet-and-greets with Fallada researchers

Significance

With novels such as Little Man, What Now?, Once I Was a Tramp, Wolf Among Wolves, and Every Man Dies Alone, Hans Fallada is one of the most important voices in 20th-century German literature. The Hans Fallada Days in Carwitz are the central annual forum for understanding his works and biographical context – with national and increasingly international resonance.

Regional Context

Carwitz is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft Nature Park, in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The village has fewer than 200 inhabitants and has become a literarily distinguished travel destination thanks to the Hans Fallada Days and continuous museum work – unique in this form in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
