10th Edition — Decentralised Neighbourhood Festival on Chemnitz's Sonnenberg
Sonnenberg, one of Chemnitz's most dynamic districts, has been the scene of profound urban development changes for decades. From the ruptures of the post-reunification years, a vibrant scene of initiatives emerged, which today shapes the neighbourhood with district festivals, studios, associations, and cafés. «Hang zur Kultur» is the manifestation of this scene — a day in May when the entire district becomes a stage.
Unlike traditional neighbourhood festivals, «Hang zur Kultur» has no main stage. Instead, over 30 participants open their premises for an afternoon, each offering their own programme: initiatives with workshops, studios with open doors, associations with performances, cafés with concerts. Visitors stroll from one venue to another, rediscovering the district and finding surprises between St. Joseph's Church, Körnerplatz, and the Ideengarten.
The festival begins at 1:45 PM with the «Flowers Instead of Concrete» procession, led by the Paper Lantern Collective. The colourful parade starts at Lessingplatz and ends at Stadtwirtschaft on Schüffnerstraße, where the ZEUX anniversary celebration takes place. The symbolism is clear: instead of grey concrete, the district is to be filled with colour, community, and cultural diversity.
During the festival's main hours — from 2 PM to 6 PM — hundreds of programme items run in parallel: concerts and DJ sets, a participatory children's circus by Birikino in Alberti-Park, a chill-out area with a mini book flea market in Zietenpark, art exhibitions, DIY workshops (from chocolate making to printing), culinary stations (Afghan cuisine at Gandoom, experiments at KaffeeSatz), and city tours. In the Ideengarten on the northern Sonnenberg, an international spring programme for all generations takes place.
The anniversary year — 10 years of neighbourhood festival — is celebrated with a particularly dense programme. The focus is on the southern and northern parts of Sonnenberg: St. Joseph's Church, Körnerplatz, and the Ideengarten in the north form the anchors, with studios, cafés, association rooms, and initiatives spread in between.
The motto for 2026 is «Sonnenberg in Full Bloom» — a conscious connection to the «Flowers Instead of Concrete» symbolism of the opening procession.
