Late summer craft market on the Schlei harbour — the season finale of the Handgemacht series in Kappeln
The Handgemacht series organises two markets annually in Kappeln: one in spring as the season opener and one in late summer as the season highlight at the end of the school holidays. Both markets take place in the same harbour area, but the atmosphere is different: Spring = new beginnings, Summer = sun-drenched end of holidays with warm evening light over the Schlei.
As with all Handgemacht markets, the strict rule applies: only individually produced items, no imported mass-produced goods, no resale. The approximately 50 exhibitors are the makers of what they sell. The range extends from minimalist ceramics, handmade jewellery, and leather goods to printmaking, woodcuts, and small sculptures.
With the summer edition in 2026, the market will reach its 31st edition in Kappeln. This is good evidence that the combination of a clear selection (only custom-made items) and an attractive setting (harbour area on the Schlei) is sustainable in the long term — for both exhibitors and the public.
Kappeln is located at the mouth of the Schlei river into the Baltic Sea, in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. The historic bascule bridge over the Schlei is one of the few remaining bascule bridges in Germany and a landmark of the town. It is opened several times a day for boats — a small spectacle that many market visitors enjoy. The harbour promenade "Am Hafen" becomes a festival mile in late summer, situated between market stalls, ice cream parlours, restaurants, and arriving excursion ships.
With the 2026 summer edition, the Handgemacht market celebrates its 31st edition in Kappeln. Organiser Ingrid Berkau and her team have selected around 50 exhibitors — all makers of unique pieces, all personally present at their stands.
The market area extends across the harbour area "Am Hafen" — between Kappeln's bascule bridge (opened several times daily for boats on the Schlei) and the landing stage for excursion boats. Due to the limited space, the promenade "Am Hafen" is also used. The exhibitors have been very satisfied with the location for years — the mix of picturesque scenery, high daily visitor numbers, and market activity works well.
