Volkslauf (popular run) with six distances — from Bambini to Half Marathon
Handewitt is a municipality with just under 11,000 inhabitants in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, directly on the Danish border and adjacent to the city of Flensburg. The Handewitter Sommerlauf, held annually since 2012, has become one of the most popular running events in northern Schleswig-Holstein. Its character: inclusive, family-friendly, athletically demanding, yet accessible.
What makes the run special is the variety of distances. From the 400-meter Bambini run for the little ones, to 2.5 kilometers for beginners, 5 kilometers for running or Nordic walking, 10 kilometers for ambitious hobby athletes, up to the full half marathon — plus a half marathon as a two-person relay. There is also a wheelchair race, making the event inclusive. Practically everyone can find a suitable distance here.
The courses are DLV-measured and thus recognized for official best times. The topography is predominantly flat — Schleswig-Holstein doesn't offer much in terms of elevation, which turns the course into a fast one. It's also suitable for beginners who want to set their first half marathon personal best under uncomplicated conditions.
The organizer is Triple Sportevents — a regional sports agency that organizes several running and triathlon events in northern Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the Handewitter Sommerlauf, the Flensburg City Run (in March) and the Wanderup Triathlon (in August) are part of their annual program. Visitors to the Sommerlauf immerse themselves in an established running community where athletes from Flensburg, Schleswig, the surrounding area, and Danish Southern Jutland come together.
The 15th Handewitter Sommerlauf will take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, starting in the early morning. All courses start and finish at the Wikinghalle in Handewitt.
All courses are DLV-measured, largely flat, and run on asphalt paths around Handewitt. The courses are clearly marked, with aid stations distributed along the longer distances.
Registration via handewittersommerlauf.de. Detailed course maps, entry fees, and aid stations are also available online — updates and logistics information on the organizer's website or at RaceResult.
