About Herbstmarkt Flensburg

The Flensburger Herbstmarkt — affectionately called the Exe-Jahrmarkt by locals — is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most traditional folk festivals (Volksfeste). For ten days, the historic Exe fairground at Museumsberg transforms into a vibrant funfair with rides for all ages, children's carousels, game stalls, candied almonds, doughnuts, and a North German atmosphere. Visitors come not only from Flensburg and the surrounding area but also from nearby Denmark — Germany's northernmost major city is just a few kilometers from the border, and the Herbstmarkt is a meeting point on both sides of the border.

Flensburg — Germany's Northernmost Major City

Flensburg, with around 90,000 inhabitants and its administrative seat, is Germany's northernmost major city, located on the inner Flensburg Fjord — right on the German-Danish border. The independent city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein has a distinct maritime tradition, a lively student life, and its own bilingual identity (German and Danish are cultivated side-by-side here). The Herbstmarkt has been part of the city's cultural annual calendar for generations.

The Exe Fairground

The Exe fairground at Museumsberg is Flensburg's traditional venue for folk festivals and major events. The Exe (from Excercierplatz, meaning parade ground) is located directly below Museumsberg — one of the city's most beautiful viewpoints — and is large enough to accommodate the numerous rides of the Herbstmarkt. It's about a 10-minute walk from Flensburg train station and around 15 minutes from the harbor.

Program and Atmosphere

  • Rides for all age groups — from classic children's carousels to modern loopings and Ferris wheels
  • Game stalls: shooting galleries, throwing games, dart throwing, claw machines
  • Food and Drink: candied almonds, doughnuts, crêpes, bratwurst, potato pancakes, sweets
  • Family program: Children's days with reduced prices
  • Evening ambiance: light illumination, maritime flair due to proximity to the harbor

The German-Danish Audience

Like many events in Flensburg, the Herbstmarkt has a distinct cross-border appeal. Visitors from Aabenraa, Sønderborg, and Padborg make up a significant portion of the audience — a typical characteristic of the northern Schleswig region.
