Two-day inauguration of the new village square with barrel tapping, live concerts, and pony rides
Sternenfels is a small community in the Enzkreis district on the southern edge of the Kraichgau, with around 2,600 inhabitants, known for its location between Pforzheim and Heilbronn. In recent years, the municipality has carried out an ambitious renovation project: the new town center with the village square has been completely redesigned—as a meeting place, as a festival ground, as the symbolic center of a village reinventing itself. The 2026 Village Square Festival is the festive inauguration of this project and, at the same time, the first test of whether the square fulfills its function as a social meeting point.
Saturday, May 16, 2026, begins at 5 PM with the traditional barrel tapping by the mayor. The ritual—a wooden beer barrel is tapped with a hammer-like blow, the first mug flows, the festival is officially opened—connects to the centuries-old Swabian-Baden festival tradition. This is followed by welcoming speeches, the handover of the new village square to the public, and the presentation of the design concept by architects and urban planners.
The stage program offers a balanced mix: live concerts by regional bands and cover bands on Saturday evening, brass music by local music clubs on Sunday morning, and performances by Sternenfels clubs in the afternoon. For children, there are pony rides—a classic at Baden village festivals—as well as bouncy castles, face painting, and craft activities. The catering is provided by the Sternenfels clubs and some local restaurateurs: Maultaschen, Wurstsalat, lentils with Spätzle, Bratwurst, homemade cakes, regional beer, and wine from the Kraichgau.
More important than the festival itself is the symbolic dimension of this event: the municipality of Sternenfels has invested in the new village square over years, with public funds, with citizen participation, and with a clear concept. The 2026 Village Square Festival is the acid test—will the square be accepted? Will it be lively? Will future events be able to take place here? The fact that the Pforzheimer Zeitung (PZ-News) and the Mühlacker Tagblatt have announced the festival extensively in advance indicates great interest far beyond the municipal borders.
