325 Years of the Dernekämper Schützenverein

The Dülmen district of Dernekamp belongs to the district town of Dülmen in the Coesfeld district (Münster administrative district, Westphalia). The Dernekämper Schützenverein, founded in 1701, is thus one of the oldest marksmen's associations in Westphalian Münsterland. In 2026, the association celebrates its 325th anniversary with a four-day marksmen's festival from May 23rd to 26th, 2026 — an event that goes far beyond the usual scope of an annual marksmen's festival tradition.

Marksmen's Tradition in Münsterland

Marksmen's associations shape club life in Münsterland more deeply than in many other German regions. They are not only marksmen's clubs in the narrow sense but also bearers of Catholic tradition (shooting masses, patron saints' days), social conviviality (marksmen's festivals, balls), and community engagement (Carnival, village festivals, harvest festivals). The Dernekämper Schützenverein, one of the oldest in the region, has combined these functions for over three centuries.

Festival Week with King's Shooting

The marksmen's festival follows the traditional Westphalian format: Kick-off on Saturday evening with the festival tent opening and dance, on Sunday a shooting mass in the nearby parish church, followed by the king's shooting — the central moment where the new marksmen's king is determined by shooting at a wooden bird. On Monday, a festival parade with the new royal couple through Dernekamp, and on Tuesday, the king's ball with musical entertainment. The shooting mass, the king's shooting, and the parade are traditionally the main attractions for the local population.

Festival Tent at the Dernekämper School

The festival tent is located at the Dernekämper School, the traditional festival grounds of the district. Catering is provided by members of the marksmen's association and external caterers — Westphalian specialties (Pumpernickel, Mettwurst, Schinken), draft beer, spirits. Live music and DJ sets characterize the festival tent evenings.

325th Anniversary — Special Highlights

For the 325th anniversary, the marksmen's association is planning additional highlights: an extended festival week (4 days instead of the usual 3), a historical festival booklet with the club's history, an invitation to former marksmen's kings from recent decades for an evening of honor, and a grand fireworks display on the final evening.
