Beer festival of the traditional Karlsberg brewery with three specialty beers to choose from
With an annual production of around 1.3 million hectoliters, the Karlsberg brewery in Homburg is one of the largest independent private breweries in Germany and the most important industrial company in the Saarpfalz district. It was out of this tradition that the Braunacht was created in 2017: a beer festival that celebrates the connection between the brewery and its hometown.
The concept is unusual: Karlsberg brews three limited specialty beers for each Braunacht season, which are only served on that particular weekend. In 2026, these are:
Guests vote via QR code in each pub to decide which of the three specialty beers will be added to the permanent product range. A charming democratization of the brewing decision.
The event kicks off at 4 PM with the keg tapping ceremony by the mayor and the brewery board on the Historischer Marktplatz. A stage will be set up, the Saarbrücken band RoastBeat will perform live sets in the afternoon, and pretzels and hearty snacks will be served. The market square remains the center of activity until 8 PM, after which the crowd disperses to nine participating pubs around the market square and the Alte Schlosserei.
According to the brewery, the Alte Schlosserei on the Karlsberg brewery grounds in Homburg-Schwarzenacker houses "Southwest Germany's largest beer dispensing system" with 20 taps. During the Braunacht, it opens for the festival evening, complemented by live music and brewery tours.
The Homburg Braunacht is the first date in a series that Karlsberg is hosting in six cities: Homburg, Saarlouis, Merzig, St. Ingbert, Kaiserslautern, and St. Wendel. Those who want to experience it can therefore taste the specialty beer trio over several weekends in different city settings.
The Karlsberg brewery has announced the Braunacht 2026 for Saturday, April 25, 2026. As usual, Homburg, the brewery's hometown, will host the start of the six-date Saarland-Palatinate tour.
Three limited beers are up for choice this year: the unfiltered Karlsberg Zwickel (5.2%), the dark Karlsberg Nachtschicht (4.5%) with caramel notes and caffeine, and the red Karlsberg Kirschbier (3.1%). Via QR codes in the participating pubs, guests will vote on which of these three beers will be added to the Karlsberg range.
Participating pubs will be announced on karlsberg.de starting March 2026. The tour continues in May in Saarlouis, Merzig, St. Ingbert, Kaiserslautern, and St. Wendel.
Free admission to the market square. Specialty beer approx. €4–5 per glass. Prices in the pubs are set by the respective establishments. Brewery tours in the Alte Schlosserei are subject to a fee.
