Eight classical highlights per season in the Saalbau Homburg — curated by Markus Korselt
Anyone who thinks that top-class classical music is only available in Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg hasn't heard in Homburg yet. For decades, the Homburg Master Concerts have brought together international soloists and ensembles in the Saalbau cultural center — a university town in the Saarpfalz district, which combines two very different attractions: the University Hospital of Saarland and the Schlossberghöhlen cave system. Eight concerts per season, with artistic direction in the hands of conductor and cultural manager Markus Korselt, who was the chief conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra for many years.
Unlike many small-town concert series that limit themselves to established repertoire, Homburg dares to explore crossover, experimental programs, and programmed breaks. A season might start with a classical chamber music evening, continue with a tribute show to David Bowie, and end with a solo recital by a star like Hilary Hahn. This mix explains why even classical music skeptics get their money's worth here.
The 2025/2026 season bundles three special must-see events:
In addition, there are other concerts between autumn 2025 and summer 2026, detailed in the official season program of the city of Homburg and on the website saalbau-homburg.de.
The Saalbau cultural center in Homburg is a modern multi-purpose stage with surprisingly good acoustics and a hall that remains intimate enough for every seat to be close to the action. Nestled in the city center, accessible on foot from Homburg/Saar train station, it is also perfect for day-trippers from Saarbrücken, Mannheim, Kaiserslautern, or Karlsruhe — Homburg is an ICE hub with direct connections.
The Master Concerts are supported by the district and university town of Homburg, alternate with theater guest performances in the Saalbau season, and are a flagship of the cultural commitment of the Saarpfalz district. Anyone who wants to experience Saarland's culture beyond the highlights of Saarbrücken should mark at least one Saalbau season on their calendar.
The spring leg is the heart of the current season. With Hilary Hahn, an artist of the highest international caliber performs in Saarland; the Brentano Quartet is among the world's leading string quartets; and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra brings its highly acclaimed Bowie crossover program to the Saar.
