About Erntebittgottesdienst Leonbronn
Erntebittgottesdienst Leonbronn — edition 2026
Erntebittgottesdienst June 28, 2026
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old Württemberg tradition. The service at 6 PM is relatively short (approx. 45 minutes) and combines the plea for a good harvest with songs and readings from the Protestant harvest festival canon. Afterwards, it seamlessly transitions into the Kirchplatzhocketse.
The Protestant parish of Leonbronn serves on a voluntary basis; all catering revenue goes to parish projects. It is an authentic village Hocketse, as found in some smaller communities in Württemberg.

Erntebittgottesdienst — Ancient Protestant Custom
The Erntebittgottesdienst is a traditional Protestant harvest festival, celebrated around the end of early summer (typically late June or early July) to pray for a good upcoming harvest — the counterpart to the Erntedankfest (Thanksgiving harvest festival) in late summer/autumn. The Württembergian Protestant tradition still observes this plea for a bountiful harvest — many smaller village churches celebrate the service annually. In Leonbronn, a district of Zaberfeld on the western Heuchelberg, the Protestant parish has maintained this tradition for generations. In 2026, the date falls on Sunday, June 28, at 6 PM.
Jakobuskirche Leonbronn
The Jakobuskirche Leonbronn is a small, intimate Protestant village church with a church square in front. It is located in the village center of Leonbronn and is the focal point of village life. The parish comprises about 350 members; its activities are closely intertwined with village life. The Erntebittgottesdienst and the subsequent Kirchplatzhocketse are the most important summer occasions for the community to present itself publicly — all residents of Leonbronn and guests are welcome at this event, regardless of denomination.
Kirchplatzhocketse — The Sociable Continuation
After the service, the Kirchplatzhocketse begins immediately — a traditional Württembergian village event held on the church square. Hocketse, from the Swabian word hocken (to sit), here means a convivial gathering with refreshments. The parish sets up its serving stalls on the church square: homemade sausages (often from the Sankt-Georgs-Verein shooting club), Maultaschen (Swabian dumplings), potato salad, plum cake, and other homemade specialties from Leonbronn housewives. Wine from the nearby Heuchelberg vineyards and beer from the region accompany the food. The atmosphere is cozy, intergenerational, and thoroughly village-like — a Hocketse in the classic Swabian sense.
Leonbronn and Zaberfeld — Heuchelberg Foothills
Leonbronn is one of the four districts of Zaberfeld (Heilbronn-Land, Heilbronn district, AGS 08125) — alongside Ochsenburg, Michelbach am Heuchelberg, and the core town of Zaberfeld. The municipality is located in the western Zabergau, at the transition to the Heuchelberg hills. Approximately 3,500 inhabitants are spread across the four districts. Leonbronn is the smallest with around 400 inhabitants. The Hocketse is therefore a genuine village event — not a big city event with a curated program, but an authentic piece of local tradition. Heuchelberg vineyards nearby offer wines that complement the Hocketse.
