Fun run by the harbor — seven distances around the fjord
The Flensburg loves you Marathon bears its name for good reason: here you don't run off in an industrial area, but through the pulsating heart of Germany's northernmost city. Start and finish are in the middle of the pedestrian zone at Südermarkt, and the course follows the fjord as closely as possible — harbor basin, Kielseng, fjord bank, Nordertor, old town. Since its premiere in 2017, the event has become a firm fixture in the calendar for the district of Flensburg-Stadt (independent city) and the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein.
The concept convinces with its variety — nobody has to run a marathon from the start to be there:
The 10.55 km circuit is flat, fast, and extremely photogenic. You start at Südermarkt, run through the pedestrian zone down to the harbor basin, then over Kielseng and the fjord bank to the turnaround point. Directly on the fjord, you run back, around the harbor tip, through the historic Nordertor and over Norderstraße back to the finish. Those running the marathon see this scenery four times — and that's exactly the concept: every lap, every cheer, every harbor edge.
The motto is „For the love of sport. For the love of the region.“ Local sponsors like VR Bank Nord, AOK, Jacob Cement, FRS, or Beckmann Küchen support the event, and the city center becomes a running mile with refreshment stops, live music, and cheering crowds. The distribution of starting documents in the Flensburg Galerie on Saturday is a small festival in itself. With around 2,500 participants, the race is one of the largest grassroots sports events in North Frisia and the Schleswig-Flensburg region.
The premiere took place in 2017, supported by a volunteer association that wanted to bring a modern harbor run to northern Schleswig-Holstein. After just a few years, the date became established in the German fun run calendar — also thanks to its direct location on the water, the flat profile, and the maritime atmosphere that you otherwise only find at classics in Hamburg or Kiel.
On the first Sunday in September 2026, the anniversary edition will start with the motto "For the love of sport. For the love of the region." Around 2,500 runners are expected again. The start times have been slightly adjusted compared to previous programs to optimize distribution on the course and in the finish area — the details in the official 2026 announcement on flensburg-marathon.de are binding.
VR Bank Nord (Marathon), Jacob Cement (Half Marathon), FRS (10 km), AOK (5 km), Beckmann Küchen (Relay), Mr. Scandis Funpark (Kids), Kaskade (Bambini), Hochzwei.
All courses follow the 10.55 km circuit Südermarkt → Harbor basin → Kielseng → Fjord bank → Turnaround point → Harbor tip → Nordertor → Norderstraße → Südermarkt.
The exact start times for each distance will be set in the official 2026 announcement (PDF on flensburg-marathon.de) and may differ from previous years' information.
