Concerts, readings, encounters, and the grand festival of cultures over several weeks in Flensburg
Flensburg is a special city in the far north of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located on the German-Danish border, with a large Danish population and a vibrant migrant community. The Intercultural Weeks make this diversity visible — and go beyond the framework set by the nationally organised 'Intercultural Weeks'.
Instead of a single event day, the programme in Flensburg spans several weeks, sometimes up to two months in the past. Participants include the Deutsches Haus, churches and mosques, associations, schools, the Flensburg Theatre, the City Library, social institutions, and private initiatives. The range extends from concerts featuring music from around the world to discussion evenings, children's programmes, and encounter brunches.
A recurring programme item is the Day of Open Mosques, where Flensburg's mosque communities invite visitors into their premises — a low-threshold opportunity to encounter the city's Muslim communities.
The traditional highlight is the Festival of Cultures — now often also operating under the name Festival of Encounters — at the Deutsches Haus. On this day, associations and groups from the city's various communities present themselves with stage programmes, dance, music, food, and information stands. The festival is free of charge and aimed at all residents of Flensburg.
Behind the Intercultural Weeks is the Intercultural Weeks Working Group, an alliance of associations, initiatives, and municipal bodies, working with the Integration Officer of the City of Flensburg. It lacks district status — Flensburg is an independent city and belongs to the independent urban district of Flensburg.
The event series has been firmly established in Flensburg's cultural calendar for over 17 years. In 2025, the programme ran from September 7th to November 8th — a similarly long period is expected for 2026.
The content is jointly developed by the integration officer of the City of Flensburg and the Intercultural Weeks working group with the participating associations, churches, and mosque communities. The specific themes of the federal network 'Intercultural Week' are redefined each year and locally adapted in Flensburg.
The detailed programme for 2026 will be published from late summer 2026 on flensburg.de and events-flensburg.de. As in previous years, the following are expected:
Specific names, dates, and venues will be published during the summer — the series is traditionally not communicated too far in advance, as many programme items are only finalised in the final planning phase.
Flensburg is the terminus station on the Hamburg–Flensburg line (RE and long-distance trains). By car, take the A7 motorway (exit Flensburg). The city centre and Deutsches Haus are within walking distance of the train station.
Most events — including the Festival of Cultures / Encounters — are free of charge. Individual concerts or readings may charge an entrance fee.
Detailed programme available from late summer onwards on flensburg.de and events-flensburg.de.
