Three days of music, dance, and staged performances in Halberstadt Cathedral
Halberstadt is located in the Harz district at the northern foot of the low mountain range, about 50 km southwest of Magdeburg. The small cathedral city is famous for three things: its cathedral, its Cathedral Treasury—one of Europe's most valuable church treasures with 650 medieval objects—and the Cage project "As slow as possible," performed since 2001 in the Burchardi Church, which is scheduled to last 639 years. The cathedral itself, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, combines French High Gothic with North German brick tradition and is considered one of the most important early examples of this stylistic blend.
The Cathedral Festival was launched in 2018 to leverage the cultural radiance of this ensemble. Unlike the traditional Magdeburg Cathedral Festival or the Halle Handel Festival, the Halberstadt festival does not follow an established festival model but develops its own formats based on the space and its collection. Dance in the cathedral—a rare form—is part of the program, as are grand choral evenings, concerts with the Harzer Sinfoniker and the Wernigerode Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, as well as guided tours of the Cathedral Treasury, which are integrated into the festival.
Each edition follows a theme connected to the city's thematic focuses. In 2026, it will be: "Fabrics for Visions — Faith, Power, and Politics at Halberstadt Cathedral." It picks up on the "Textile Year" in the Cathedral Treasury, which highlights the cathedral's textile collection—vestments, hangings, and reliquary cloths. The festival explores how faith, power, and political symbolism are interwoven in fabrics, images, and spaces, translating this into music and movement.
The Harz district, with Wernigerode, Quedlinburg (UNESCO World Heritage), Halberstadt, Thale, and Blankenburg, is one of the densest cultural landscapes in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The Cathedral Festival is part of a growing festival landscape that expands Harz tourism beyond the classic summer hiking season.
The 2026 Halberstadt Cathedral Festival develops its program line from the "Textile Year" in the Cathedral Treasury. Fabrics—the vestments, hangings, and tapestries in the collection—become symbols of faith, power, and politics, and the festival translates this theme into four very different formats: a dance evening with the TanzHarz ensemble, an oratorio program by the Halberstadt Kantorei, a symphony concert with the combined forces of the Harzer Sinfoniker and the Wernigerode Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and a guided encounter with the cathedral's treasury. Specific work titles and soloists will be announced by the organizer in spring 2026.
The detailed musical program for each event will be announced by the organizer in spring 2026 at domfestspiele-halberstadt.de.
