Two Christmas Markets, One Cathedral City
As the days grow short in late autumn and the wind blows from the Magdeburg Börde towards the Harz Mountains, what is probably the most atmospheric time of the year begins in Halberstadt. The town in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt presents its Advent in two closely intertwined formats: the classic Halberstädter Christmas Market on Markt and Holzmarkt — and the special Domweihnacht between the Church of Our Lady and the mighty Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of St. Stephen and St. Sixtus.
The Domweihnacht — Medieval Flair Between the Churches
What sets the Halberstädter Domweihnacht apart from other Advent markets in Central Germany is its backdrop: nestled between two of the most important sacred buildings in Saxony-Anhalt, it creates an unparalleled atmosphere. Wooden huts with regional crafts, mulled wine stands under old trees, the crackling of open fire pits, and the warm light of historic lanterns — the Domweihnacht stages Advent as a contemplative experience, not a loud entertainment mile.
Antique Carousel Organs and the 1929 Children's Railway
Two treasures make the market unique: the antique carousel organs, whose bulbous roller mechanisms once played at the grand fairs of the German Empire and which today fill the Domweihnacht with nostalgic sound — and the historic children's railway from 1929, which has been taking young and old passengers between the stalls for almost a century. Both attractions are technical monuments from the pioneering era of mobile showmanship and a piece of living folk culture.
Marktplatz and Holzmarkt — The Classic Program
In parallel, the historic market square with the town hall and Roland statue transforms into a classic Christmas market: a Christmas pyramid, nativity figures, fir branches, a Ferris wheel offering a wide view over the Vorharz region, and the usual classics — bratwurst, mulled wine, schmalzkuchen (lard cakes), candied almonds. A short walk from the market square leads to the Holzmarkt, and from there on to the Domplatz. This allows you to experience the entire Halberstadt Advent in a relaxed city stroll.
Halberstadt — The Gateway to the North Harz
Halberstadt itself is worth a visit far beyond the Christmas market. The Cathedral Treasury in the Cathedral is one of the most important collections of medieval sacred art in Central Europe. The Church of Our Lady, a flat-roofed Romanesque basilica, is the oldest Romanesque church in Halberstadt. And last but not least: in the former Burchardi Church, John Cage's famous organ piece As Slow As Possible has been running since 2001 — planned to last 639 years. Those who travel to Halberstadt in Advent can therefore combine the magic of Advent with one of the most extraordinary sound art projects in the world.
When?
The Domweihnacht opens in 2026 starting November 28th and runs for several Advent weekends until just before Christmas. The exact end date and weekday opening hours will be announced by the city administration in autumn 2026.
