Three days of city festival on Domplatz and Domhang at the gateway to the Harz
Anyone arriving in Halberstadt sees the cathedral first: two towers, early Gothic, almost French in appearance, one of the most important sacred buildings in Northern Germany. Directly in front of it lies the expansive Domplatz – and it is precisely here that the Halberstadtfest takes place every July, the official city festival of the district town in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt.
Stages, market stalls, food trucks, and children's areas are spread across the Domplatz and Domhang. The mix of live concerts, regional vendors, show acts, and family programs attracts a diverse audience from the entire region – from families from the Harz villages to weekend guests from Magdeburg and Halle. The atmosphere against the backdrop of the cathedral has a theatrical quality, even without staging.
A special feature in 2026: In parallel to the Halberstadtfest, the traditional pottery market Ton am Dom will take place on July 4th and 5th. Over 50 ceramic artists from Germany and Europe will exhibit between the cathedral and the Church of Our Lady. The accompanying concert program in the cathedral and on the square makes the weekend a concentrated cultural moment that extends far beyond Halberstadt.
Halberstadt is the district town in the Harz district and is located on the northeastern edge of the low mountain range. Known as the "Gateway to the Harz," the city combines medieval architecture, a renowned theater, and the famous John Cage organ project "As Slow As Possible" in the Burchardikirche, which runs until the year 2640. Visitors to the Halberstadtfest rarely come just for the stages – the city itself is part of the program.
Three days of city festival in a prime location: Domplatz and Domhang form the main backdrop. Live concerts take place on several stages, complemented by market stalls, a children's area, and gastronomic offerings from regional providers in the Harz district. The accompanying pottery market "Ton am Dom" on the preceding weekend attracts additional visitors to the city.
Detailed stage program to be published by the City of Halberstadt in June 2026.
