Plattdüütsch (Low German) play by the Kukedeeler Speeldeel in the Old Schoolhouse
The Kukedeeler Speeldeel is one of those volunteer theatre groups that keep Low German («plattdüütsche») stage life in Schleswig-Holstein alive. Every year, the group rehearses a new play in the winter and performs it in the spring at the former Rügge schoolhouse — where the Speeldeel has its permanent stage home. In 2026, the play on the schedule is «Dat Kloke Gretel»: a comedy about Köksch Gretel, a cook who masters the small and large challenges of everyday life with cleverness and joie de vivre.
Three performances are scheduled:
Admission is free, but a reservation is expressly recommended — the number of seats in the Old Schoolhouse is limited. Reservations can be made with Anke Braas at 04646 990878.
«Speeldeel» literally means «playgroup» in Low German, i.e., the theatre group. In Schleswig-Holstein and Northern Germany as a whole, Low German theatre has been a firmly established form of voluntary civic culture since the 19th century, supported by villages, districts, and clubs. The Kukedeeler Speeldeel follows this tradition — the group rehearses several times a week during the winter, and the spring performance is the highlight of the year.
Rügge is a small municipality with a few hundred inhabitants in the Schleswig-Flensburg district (Angeln, east of the A7 motorway), in the heart of rural Schleswig-Holstein. The former schoolhouse has been converted into a village meeting point and houses, among other things, the Speeldeel's theatre stage. Even if you don't speak Low German, you can still enjoy the evening — the Speeldeel's typical acting style (strong gestures, clear punchlines, often with German interjections) makes the plot understandable even without knowledge of Low German. It is well worth experiencing an evening at a village's Low German theatre — culture directly from the heart of the region.
«Dat Kloke Gretel» is the 2026 production by the Kukedeeler Speeldeel — an original production rehearsed by the ensemble during the winter months. The plot revolves around Köksch Gretel, a resolute and clever cook who masters the challenges she encounters in the play with wit and joie de vivre. Classic Low German folk theatre: warm-hearted, with clear characters and well-placed punchlines.
The three performances on the weekend of April 18th and 19th, 2026, are the only series of performances of the season — those who wish to see the play should register in advance. The Speeldeel works on a voluntary basis; free admission is part of the concept.
