Four-day Franconian Kirchweih in Knetzgau am Main
The Knetzger Kerwa – 'Kirchweih' in Franconia – is one of the central local festivals of the municipality of Knetzgau in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge. For four days, from Friday to Monday, the festival grounds at the Franz-Hofmann-Halle transform into a small, bustling festival world of beer tents, stalls, carousels, and music.
The organizer is the Musikverein Knetzgau 1960 e.V., which coordinates the festival parade, catering, musical accompaniment, and logistics. The Kerwa traditionally falls on the last Sunday in August – a date deeply ingrained in the Franconian calendar and one that has shaped generations of Knetzgau residents. Knetzgau is one of the municipalities that celebrates the Kirchweih for a full four days according to old custom – Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The amusement park has been designed for years by the showman company Uebel & Sachs: bumper cars, children's carousels, shooting galleries, and raffles. In addition, the Knetzgau sports clubs – especially TSV and FC Knetzgau – operate stalls with their own specialties: Entenpfeffer (duck stew), grilled fish, fresh pizza, and Franconian delicacies.
Knetzgau is located on the right bank of the Main river in the Haßberge district, between Haßfurt and Schweinfurt. The Kerwa is one of the few festivals that the entire community still celebrates together: clubs, the church community, showman families, and guests from the surrounding Main Franconian villages meet at the Franz-Hofmann-Halle, which has served as the central venue for the community for decades.
The 2026 Kerwa follows the traditional four-day schedule. The organizer is again the Musikverein Knetzgau 1960 e.V., responsible for catering and musical entertainment.
On Friday, August 28th, 2026, the festival begins at 6 PM with the parade from the new town hall to the Franz-Hofmann-Halle. The reserve soldiers' association will raise the Kirchbaum, followed by the ceremonial beer tapping in front of the festival tent. The Uebel & Sachs amusement park also opens.
Sunday, August 30th, 2026 (the last Sunday in August), is the main Kerwa day with a festival service, lunch in the hall, sporting events by FC Knetzgau in the afternoon, and festival operations into the evening.
The final band selection for 2026 will be communicated via the website of the Musikverein Knetzgau.
