A City with Roman Roots
Günzburg, the Swabian district town between the Danube and Iller rivers, was 'Guntia' in Roman times — a fortified settlement on the Limes, a central hub between Ulm and Augsburg. This Roman prehistory gave the present-day city festival its name: the Guntiafest. It takes place in the historic old town area, much of whose architecture dates from the 18th and 19th centuries — with the closed [city layout], the Margrave's Castle, and the almost picturesque main square.
Clubs as Main Actors
The strength of the Guntiafest lies in its consistent club structure: over twenty Günzburg clubs set up their stalls — from traditional heritage clubs, shooting clubs, and the fire department to sports clubs and migrant associations with their culinary offerings. Each club designs its stall's look, its program, and its food selection. The result is a city festival that is truly diverse — and offers something new annually because the clubs exchange their concepts.
Program: Live Music and Show Programs
Stages are set up on the various squares of the old town — Marktplatz, Schloßplatz, Hofgartenplatz. Program 2026 (usual format): Sat 4 PM opening with the mayor, followed by live music with cover bands and jazz trios; show programs by dance groups, cheerleaders; bands playing late into the night. Sunday is more family-friendly: morning pint with brass music from 10 AM, children's program, acoustic acts in the evening.
Culinary Diversity
A specialty of the Guntiafest is its culinary range — far beyond the typical bratwurst-pretzel-beer axis. Mexican tacos, Croatian ćevapčići, Italian pasta, Turkish köfte, Vietnamese spring rolls, plus classic Bavarian Schäuferla and Swabian Maultaschen. This diversity reflects Günzburg's club structure — a district town with active migrant associations that help shape the city festival.
Günzburg in the District of Günzburg
Günzburg is the district town of the Swabian district of the same name, located on the A 8 (Munich – Stuttgart) and the Danube. With around 21,000 inhabitants, it is a typical Swabian medium-sized town. The LEGOLAND amusement park is also located right near Günzburg — a tourist draw that feeds the city festival with families from all over southern Germany.
