12th edition of the Freiburg Film Festival for Ecology and Sustainability
The Greenmotions Film Festival originated in 2014 as a volunteer project from the circle of the Kommunales Kino Freiburg. Today, it is one of the most important sustainability-oriented film festivals in Southern Germany. Every year in November, it shows international documentaries, feature films, and short films that address ecological, social, and ethical issues — from climate change and supply chains to the recognition of socially invisible groups.
The 12th edition focuses on perspectives and life realities that often receive too little attention in public discourse. Migrant workers, caregivers, care work, indigenous communities, marginalized professional groups — the program seeks cinematic answers to the question of who is visible in our society and who is not.
The venue is the Kommunales Kino Freiburg at Urachstraße 40. The program includes premieres, film discussions with directors, workshops for school classes, a dedicated children's cinema with age-appropriate films, and a closing party. Refugees (children and adults) have free admission; larger groups are asked to register.
Greenmotions operates with a voluntary social sliding scale for ticket prices: 4 euros, 8 euros, or 12 euros per screening — you choose what you can afford. A city pass discount and reduced school cinema tickets are also available.
Since the 1980s, Freiburg im Breisgau has positioned itself as Germany's capital of sustainability: city districts like Vauban are considered model projects throughout Europe. Greenmotions fits seamlessly into this self-image — an event that not only shows films but also sparks debates.
The 12th edition is dedicated to recognizing those groups whose work and existence often remain invisible. International documentaries and feature films focus on caregivers, care workers, migrants, indigenous communities, and marginalized professional groups.
The program is complemented by film discussions with directors, workshops for school classes and adults, a separate children's cinema, and a closing party on Sunday evening. Refugees have free admission.
The complete film program will be published about four weeks before the festival begins at greenmotions-filmfestival.de.
