Traditional festival of the 1st Privileged Marksmen's Association in the Saale-Orla district
The tradition of marksmen's associations in Pößneck dates back a long way. The 1. Privilegierter Schützenverein Pößneck e.V. carries on a tradition that is characteristic of many clubs in Thuringian towns. Schützenfeste like the one in Pößneck are not just sporting competitions — they are folk festivals with a clear regional identity, expressing customs, camaraderie, and community.
The Schützenfest 2026 will take place from June 4th to 7th — Thursday to Sunday. The venue is the festival grounds on Bogenstraße, a traditional site on the edge of Pößneck's town centre. The festival tent hosts the dance evenings and ceremonies, while the outdoor area features the shooting competitions and the folk festival-style supporting programme.
The central sporting element is the King's Shoot: the marksmen of the club determine their new marksmen's king (or queen) in several disciplines. In addition, there are competitions for ladies, youth, and guest marksmen — the festival calendar is closely linked to the shooting regulations.
The festive opening is marked by the ceremonial beer tapping on Thursday evening. The dance evenings in the festival tent are a draw for the whole town — live music, cover bands, and DJ sets ensure a lively atmosphere. During the day, stalls, carousels, and the festival tent open for a family audience. Sunday traditionally concludes with a Frühschoppen (morning pint), brass band music, and the proclamation of the king.
Pößneck — with around 11,000 inhabitants, one of the most important towns in the Saale-Orla district — is nestled in the Kotschau valley. Alongside the town festival in September, the Schützenfest is one of the defining club events in the annual calendar. Together, these two festivals make the town a significant player in the festival culture of Southeast Thuringia.
The 2026 Schützenfest continues the established four-day format. Thursday, June 4th: Opening ceremony, beer tapping, and first dance evening. Friday and Saturday: Shooting competitions (ladies, youth, marksmen, guests) alternating with stage music and festival tent activities. Saturday evening: Grand dance evening with live band. Sunday: Frühschoppen with brass band music, proclamation of the new marksmen's king/queen, concluding in the afternoon.
Current programme: schuetzen-poessneck.de.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Dance evenings may have an admission fee (box office). Food and drinks in the festival tent à la carte.
By train to Pößneck station, from there a short walk or local bus to the Bogenstraße festival grounds. By car via the A9 (Triptis exit).
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Dance evenings in the festival tent may be subject to a charge.
The Frühschoppen on Sunday morning is a must — brass band music and the marksmen's chain are part of the traditional ceremony.
