A Thousand Years of Castle History

Ranis Castle sits enthroned on a rock above the small town of the same name in the Saale-Orla district. With over 1000 years of history, it is one of the oldest preserved hilltop castles in Thuringia. Today, it houses a museum and is the venue for events several times a year — the highlight being the Medieval Spectacle, which transforms the castle into a medieval world for a weekend.

What Happens at the Castle

Stalls, encampments, and stages are set up in the castle courtyard and along the castle grounds:

  • Artisans demonstrate old blacksmithing, bow making, leatherwork, weaving, and pottery
  • Merchants and traders offer medieval goods, costumes, drinking horns, jewelry, and books
  • Knights show fencing and tournament scenes
  • Jugglers and musicians roam the grounds
  • Food and drink: medieval cuisine with suckling pig, mead, beer, and bread

Family-Friendly and Costume-Friendly

The Medieval Spectacle is for the whole family. Visitors in historical attire receive a discount at the entrance — many regular guests come in costume, actively immersing themselves in the atmosphere. A program for children with games, craft activities, and stories is a regular part of the event.
