Direct Marketer and Handicraft Market in the Shedhalle — expected November 7/8, 2026
Pößneck, with around 12,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized town in the Saale-Orla district in eastern Thuringia, at the transition from the Saale valley to the Thuringian Schiefergebirge. The town is known for its printing and publishing industry (Pößneck was a center of German book production from the 19th century onwards) and for its historic old town with a market square and Gothic town church. The town is located in an agriculturally productive region — nestled between the slopes of the Schiefergebirge and the Saale.
The Shedhalle at Carl-Gustav-Vogel-Straße 3 is an architectural gem: a former industrial hall from the era of Pößneck's printing boom, with characteristic sawtooth roofs (serrated rows of roofs with north light) that characterized the industrial building. Today, the hall has been repurposed and hosts various events — the Herbst-Landmarkt is one of the highlights of the annual calendar. The area around the hall is used for market stalls in November, while the hall itself offers shelter in bad weather.
The focus of the market is on direct marketers from the region — farms and small manufactories that sell their products without intermediaries. The range of products is diverse: agricultural products (vegetables, fruits, potatoes from the autumn premiere), garden products (honey, jam, juices, herbs), fishery products (smoked trout, carp from the Saale ponds), game from the Thuringian Forest, cheese from farm production, bread from wood-fired ovens. In addition, artisans present items made from natural materials: basket weaving, wood carving, felt work, leather goods, natural cosmetics, beeswax products, medicinal herbs.
Despite its industrial past, the Saale-Orla district has retained a rich agricultural tradition. The farms around Pößneck, Schleiz, Bad Lobenstein, and Triptis produce in small quantities, often organic. The Herbst-Landmarkt brings this diversity together in one place once a year — an important showcase for the regional economy and sustainable consumption. Visitors to the Saale Valley in autumn can combine the market with a hike in the Schiefergebirge forests or a visit to the Saale dams — a perfect weekend in late autumn in eastern Thuringia.
The market has been held for years on the first or second weekend of November in the Shedhalle. The exact dates for 2026 will be published by the Pößneck City Trade Office in the summer/autumn. As in previous years, a weekend market (Saturday and Sunday) is expected with around 40–60 direct marketers and artisans from the Saale-Orla district and the wider region.
