Popular open-water swim of about one kilometer in the Weser river near Rinteln, a summer highlight in the Weserbergland region
The Weserschwimmen in Rinteln uses the current of the major North German river for a swimming event that deliberately sets itself apart from indoor pools or enclosed outdoor swimming basins. Participants experience the Weser from a perspective inaccessible to walkers and anglers. Those who swim through the current themselves will get to know its pace, its character, and its gentle changes in a whole new way.
The approximately one-kilometer course leads downstream through a well-visible stretch near Rinteln. Safety boats from the local DLRG group and other local water rescue services accompany the swimmers over the entire distance. Participation is only possible after registration, and a minimum swimming ability is required. The current carries the swimmers forward, making the course manageable within an acceptable time even for ambitious amateur athletes.
The swimming competition is accompanied by a convivial folk festival (Volksfest) on the bank. Stands with drinks and food, music from loudspeakers, and the cheers of spectators turn the sporting event into a summer festival that also involves non-swimmers in the atmosphere. Families come by, clubs meet, and local gastronomy takes advantage of the day.
In recent years, the Weserschwimmen has become a firm fixture in Rinteln's event calendar. It is representative of a series of summer events on and in the river that raise awareness of the Weserbergland as an attractive region for sports and recreation. The organizers, including local sports and water rescue clubs, drive the event forward every year with great volunteer effort.
The 2026 edition of the Weserschwimmen continues a successful tradition. As in previous years, several hundred participants are expected, entering the water in several start groups. The course utilizes the natural current of the river.
A festival area with drinks, food, and music will be set up on the bank. This makes the Weserschwimmen an attractive summer event for families and groups of friends as well.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in early summer 2026 on the website www.weserschwimmen.de. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: registration in the morning, briefing, start of the competition blocks, and a joint finish festival on the bank.
