Horse pilgrimage to Senftenbergkapelle since 1618
The Georgiritt Gunzendorf is one of the most impressive horse pilgrimages in Upper Franconia. From the Gunzendorf district (municipality of Buttenheim, Bamberg district), a magnificently decorated procession of riders, accompanied by brass music, travels through the meadows up to the Senftenbergkapelle on the Senftenberg. The local priest also traditionally rides along.
The tradition dates back to 1618, when riders, soldiers, and farmers brought their animals to the Senftenbergkapelle to have them blessed. After the custom had faded in the 19th century, the Georgiritt, held annually around St. George's Day (April 23rd), was revived in 1951 at the instigation of the Catholic parish of Gunzendorf. In the past, participants used to ride into the church through the main portal, pray, and exit through another door.
The Senftenbergkapelle, built in 1668/69 by master builder Valentin Juliot, originates from a castle chapel of the Veste Niedersenftenberg. Its patron, St. George, is considered the protector of knights, riders, and soldiers. After the church service and animal blessing, participants return for Franconian beer and Kirchweih (traditional fair) specialties – especially in the Senftenberg-Felsenkeller below the chapel.
On Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Georgiritt starts at 8:30 AM in Gunzendorf.
