Traditional Franconian Kerwa in the market town of Buttenheim
The Buttenheim Kirchweih is part of the tradition of the Upper Franconian Kerwa, one of the most vibrant folk festivals in the region. The venue is the market town of Buttenheim in the Bamberg district, a place with a distinct beer culture, known among other things as the birthplace of Levi Strauss.
For several days, the town center along the main street becomes a festival mile. Inns, breweries, and beer tents invite to convivial gatherings. Franconian beer, hearty delicacies, and brass band music characterize the atmosphere of this typical Kerwa.
Buttenheim and its districts maintain an exceptionally dense Kirchweih tradition: throughout the year, numerous Kerwas take place in the surrounding villages, from Tiefenhöchstadt and Ketschendorf in spring, through the Senftenbergkirchweih in Gunzendorf, to the Kirchweihen in Frankendorf and Dreuschendorf in autumn. The Buttenheim Kirchweih in August is a central highlight.
The Kerwa is much more than a folk festival: it is a unifying event that brings the village community together and connects generations. Customs, music, and Franconian inn culture are at the center.
As part of the rich Kirchweih culture of the Bamberg district, the Buttenheim Kirchweih is exemplary of the vibrant customs of Upper Franconia and the special beer and festival tradition of the Free State of Bavaria.
The 2026 edition runs from August 14th to 17th in the town center of Buttenheim. Inns, breweries, and beer tents along the main street form the heart of the festival.
The Buttenheim Kirchweih is part of a dense Kerwa calendar in the market town of Buttenheim, which in 2026 includes, among others, the Kirchweihen in Tiefenhöchstadt (May 16-18), Ketschendorf (May 23-25), the Senftenbergkirchweih Gunzendorf (July 2-6), and the Matthäuskirchweih Buttenheim (September 27).
