Tradition in the Franconian Switzerland
The Kirchweih Eggolsheim (also known as "Eggolsheimer Zeltkerwa") takes place in the market town of Eggolsheim, a municipality in the Forchheim district in Upper Franconia, northern Bavaria, on the edge of the Franconian Switzerland. It is considered one of the last major Kirchweihen of the district in the course of the year and attracts numerous visitors.
Raising of the Maypole and Parish Service
The Kirchweih traditionally begins on Saturday when the freshly decorated Kirchweihbaum (Kirchweih maypole) is paraded through the town by the Eggolsheim Music Association and erected in the afternoon. On Sunday, a solemn parish service is held in St. Martin's Church.
Betzenaustanzen — The Highlight
The highlight is the Betzenaustanzen in the heated festival tent, accompanied by the Eggolsheim Music Association. The traditional custom, in which a "Betz" (a decorated object) is passed among dancing couples, attracts many spectators every year. In addition, there is the "Kütschlafoan" (a traditional activity) and a family afternoon, during which the mayor invites children and young people.
Festival Tent and Funfair
Live music from various bands creates a lively atmosphere in the festival tent at Schwedengraben. The Kirchweih is complemented by a funfair and a colorful supporting program with "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) and lunch specials.
Franconian Kirwabrauchtum
The Eggolsheim Kirchweih combines traditional Franconian customs with modern entertainment and is firmly anchored in the event calendar of the Forchheim district.
