Traditional Kirchweih with Eierringtanz in the Franconian Switzerland
The Kirchweih in Hausen (Forchheim district) is deeply rooted in Franconian customs. It is organized by the Kirchweihgesellschaft "Deutsche Brüder Hausen", an association founded over 125 years ago specifically for the preservation and execution of Kirchweih traditions. This makes the Hausen Kerwa one of the most traditional festivals in the region.
On Kirchweihsamstag, the Kirchweih lads meet early in the morning to select and erect a stately spruce – usually over 30 meters high – as the Kirchweih tree from the forest. Erecting the tree is one of the first highlights of the multi-day festival.
The Eierringtanz on Kirchweihmontag is the hallmark of the Hausen Kerwa. In the village square, the strapping lads dance with their pretty partners according to old custom – a spectacle that attracts many visitors year after year. The dance traditionally marks the festive conclusion of the Kirchweih.
Over several days, the Kerwa offers a festival tent, brass band music, Franconian beer, and delicacies. The Hausen Kirchweih, due to its length and vibrant traditions, is one of the best-known Kerwas in the Forchheim district.
The Kirchweih in Hausen traditionally follows the Sunday around Michaelmas or a fixed October date. In 2026, the festival is expected to take place on the second weekend of October (9–12 October).
On Kirchweihsamstag, the lads of the "Deutsche Brüder" go into the forest early in the morning to fetch the stately Kirchweih tree. The famous Eierringtanz on Kirchweihmontag in the village square marks the festive conclusion. The exact program will be announced by the Kirchweihgesellschaft shortly before the festival.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the Kirchweihgesellschaft "Deutsche Brüder Hausen" shortly before the Kerwa.
Hausen is located in the Forchheim district of the Franconian Switzerland, conveniently close to the A73 motorway (Forchheim exit). During the Kirchweih, bus diversions may occur (note information from the Forchheim District Office).
Admission is free. Food and drinks in the festival tent and at the stalls are subject to a charge.
The Eierringtanz on Kirchweihmontag (starts late afternoon) is the most popular program item – secure a spot in the village square early.
