Volksfest and Night of Lights in the Europa-Rosarium — the world's largest rose collection
The Berg- und Rosenfest and the Nacht der 1000 Lichter have been among the most visited events in the Mansfeld-Südharz district for years. Both take place in the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen — the world's largest rose collection with over 8,600 different rose varieties spread over 13 hectares. In 2026, something new will be attempted for the first time: both festivals will be combined into a single day. On Saturday, June 13, the program will run from 9:30 AM to 2:00 AM.
During the day, you can enjoy the Berg- und Rosenfest: a classic Volksfest (popular festival) with a stage program, family activities, cultural performances, and of course, the splendor of roses in June — their absolute peak blooming season. As dusk falls, there will be a seamless transition into the Nacht der 1000 Lichter, where the paths, beds, and pavilions of the Rosarium will be illuminated by thousands of lights, candles, and lanterns. An atmosphere that is unparalleled in Saxony-Anhalt.
The Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen was established in 1903 as a collection of rose classics and is now a world-leading collection. Anyone walking through here in June wanders through a sea of blooming roses — wild roses, historical varieties, modern cultivars, along with more than 250 companion shrubs and perennials. It is precisely this botanical substance that makes the festival so special: no artificial festival backdrop, but a living, blooming garden as the venue.
Sangerhausen, with a population of just over 23,000, is the district town of Mansfeld-Südharz in southern Saxony-Anhalt. For centuries, the city was shaped by copper mining — a fact still remembered by the monument to mining tradition — and after reunification, it developed into a tourist destination, primarily thanks to the Rosarium. The Berg- und Rosenfest, in its name, harks back to the mining past ("Berg" means mountain/mine) and combines it with the rose-infused present. A charming little gesture that shows: in Saxony-Anhalt, industrial history and natural beauty often lie side by side.
The merged festival format for 2026 starts at 9:30 AM with the Berg- und Rosenfest, running all day with a stage program, cultural performances, children's activities, and catering. As dusk falls, the Rosarium transforms into a landscape of lights — lanterns, torches, and candles along the paths, beds, and pavilions. The atmosphere of the Nacht der 1000 Lichter is legendary; the evening extends until 2:00 AM.
Detailed program with artists will be published in spring 2026 on europa-rosarium.de.
