The Sparrenburg above Bielefeld
The Sparrenburg sits enthroned on the Sparrenberg, one of the southern hills in the Bielefeld Basin, with a view far north over the city and south over the hills of the Teutoburg Forest. Built from the late 13th century onwards as the comital residence of the Counts of Ravensberg, later expanded as a Ravensberg-Berg-Jülich fortress, it is now Bielefeld's landmark. The main tower, the keep, is accessible to visitors and offers one of the most beautiful city views on the edge of the Ruhr area.
Bielefeld Celebrates its Middle Ages
Once a year, on a July weekend, the entire castle complex becomes a festival ground. The Sparrenburgfest transforms the castle courtyard, the outer bailey, and the slope below into a vibrant medieval market with stages, encampments, and demonstrations. The organizer is Bielefeld Marketing GmbH – the city explicitly supports the festival, which explains the quality and scope of the program.
What to See
Anyone entering the castle is immediately immersed: knights in full armor patrol the courtyard, encampments of medieval groups recreate daily life (cooking over an open fire, leatherworking, blacksmith demonstrations, bow making), falconers showcase birds of prey in flight, acrobats and jesters entertain in the outer bailey, medieval musicians play bagpipes, shawms, hurdy-gurdies, and drums. A small stage in the courtyard hosts several performances daily: short plays, dance performances, combat demonstrations.
Market with Crafts and Food
The medieval market has clear selection criteria: no plastic souvenirs, but handmade leather goods, blacksmith work, medieval costumes, natural cosmetics, honey, mead, and wines, wooden toys, and related books. The food offerings also align with the concept: suckling pig and pork knuckle on the spit, stews from iron cauldrons, dark bread from a wood-fired oven, medieval seasonings.
Family-Friendly Festival
The festival is family-friendly: children can participate in hands-on workshops (archery, blacksmithing, coin minting, medieval dances), face painting, and carousels for the little ones. Parents can relax while children get to experience the Middle Ages themselves.
Bielefeld at the Foot of the Castle Mountain
The Sparrenburgfest can be well combined with a tour of Bielefeld. The Old Town with its historic market square, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld (Bauhaus architecture), the Bielefeld Bürgerwache (Citizens' Guard), the Süsterkirche, and the main hiking trail of the Teutoburg Forest are all within walking distance or a short train ride away. A weekend is enough for the castle, the city, and a bit of forest.
