36 Years of Festival Culture in the Upper Franconian Town
With around 10,000 inhabitants, Münchberg is a medium-sized town in the Upper Franconian district of Hof, a traditional centre of the textile industry, and home to the Hof University of Applied Sciences – Münchberg Campus. The annual city festival is the largest event in Münchberg's calendar, filling the weekend in mid-June with thousands of visitors from the town and the surrounding district.
Festival Mile Instead of Just a Beer Tent
Instead of a single large festival tent like at the Wiesenfest, the city festival features stages, club stalls, food stands, and activities spread throughout the entire city centre – from Bahnhofsplatz to Marktplatz and along Ludwigstraße. Münchberg's clubs (ranging from the carnival club and the fire brigade to sports clubs) operate their own stalls, and local restaurants stay open late into the night.
Sunday Shopping
The highlight of Sunday is the Sunday shopping event, when the shops in the city centre open from 1 PM to 6 PM. For the Münchberg Business Association, the organiser, the city festival also serves as an image campaign for local retail and is the highlight of the clubs' year.
Live Music on Several Stages
The programme features a mix of cover bands, regional rock groups, brass bands, and folk ensembles. Traditionally, Friday evening kicks off with a major live band. In the state of Bavaria, in the Hofer Land region, the city festival is considered an important date in the Upper Franconian summer event calendar – alongside the classic Münchberg Wiesenfest in summer, it forms a second pillar of the town's festival culture.
