Largest grassroots running event in Lower Franconia around the UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Würzburger Residenzlauf has been a firm fixture in Würzburg's sports and city life for over three decades. Organized by the City of Würzburg together with Würzburger Residenzlauf e.V., it attracts runners from all over Bavaria and beyond every April. The course is a circuit that circles the UNESCO World Heritage Würzburg Residence four times – a visual and atmospheric highlight that distinguishes the event from many other popular runs.
Starting at Residenzplatz, the route, which is entirely on asphalt, leads via the Balthasar-Neumann-Promenade, Sanderring, Friedrich-Ebert-Ring, and Rennweg back to the Residence. The official main distance is 10 km, in addition to courses of 5 km, 2.5 km (No-Limits Run), and numerous shorter distances for children from 600 m.
The Residenzlauf is a member of GERMAN ROAD RACES and is primarily designed as a grassroots sports event: kindergartens, schools, families, and hobby runners make up the vast majority of participants. More than 200 volunteers from clubs and aid organizations help run the event. The "Lauf der Asse" (Race of Aces) – a 10 km competition for the fastest runners – forms the sporting climax in the late afternoon.
Würzburg, the bishop's seat and capital of Lower Franconia (Bavaria), is famous for its Baroque architecture, the wine from the Stein vineyard, and its bridges over the Main River. The Residenzlauf stages this backdrop as a sports arena – the spectators along the route and on Residenzplatz turn the run into a city festival, where even the Würzburg residents who aren't running spend a whole day outdoors.
With 10,085 participants, the 2026 Residenzlauf broke the five-figure mark for the first time. The school and kindergarten runs together brought over 5,000 active participants to the start line, with the main 10 km race forming the climax in the late afternoon.
2026 also marked the 20th anniversary of the school and kindergarten runs, which the organizers honored with a dedicated program line. More than 200 volunteers from clubs and aid organizations ensured a smooth process.
