Traditional Costume Festival on Assumption Day at Stockplatz
Wildsteig is a municipality in the district of Weilheim-Schongau, on the eastern edge of the Upper Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel, about 90 km southwest of Munich. With only around 1,300 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller municipalities in the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills, but it has a rich club landscape. The Alpengruß Wildsteig Traditional Costume Association has been a central custodian of village customs for many generations — traditional costumes, Plattler dances, Pfingstsingen (Whitsun singing), and the annual Gartenfest are part of the regular program.
On August 15th, the high feast of Assumption Day (a public holiday in Bavaria in predominantly Catholic municipalities), the traditional costume association celebrates its Gartenfest at Stockplatz. The venue is the central festival meadow with the Stockplatz, a central place for the traditional costume association's activities. The Gartenfest functions as an open event — not only members of the association are invited, but also villagers, tourists from the Pfaffenwinkel, and friendly traditional costume associations from the region.
Standard program of a traditional costume garden festival in the Oberland: Bavarian catering (Bratwurst, Steckerlfisch, Schweinshaxe, potato salad), festival beer on tap from a neighboring brewery, coffee and homemade cakes. The musical and dance program includes: performances by its own traditional costume group (Plattler, Schuhplattlertanz, Dirndldrehen), music by a local brass band, and possibly guest performances by friendly traditional costume associations.
The Bavarian Pfaffenwinkel between the Lech and Isar rivers is one of the most traditional regions for costumes and customs in Southern Germany. Monasteries like Steingaden and the Wieskirche (UNESCO World Heritage site) shape the religious landscape, while traditional costume and shooting associations shape social life. The Gartenfest in Wildsteig is an expression of this established club culture — not a tourist show, but a vibrant celebration of tradition.
The 2026 edition fits into the dense club calendar of the Alpengruß Wildsteig Traditional Costume Association. The Gartenfest on Assumption Day is one of the four most important club events of the year, alongside the Pfingstsingen, the Dorfball, and the Leonhardiritt.
A festival tent or a covered catering area will be set up at Stockplatz, with tables and benches outdoors. Catering is provided by club members, and the musical program is organized by the local brass band together with the traditional costume group.
Wildsteig is located in the district of Weilheim-Schongau, in the Pfaffenwinkel. By car via the A95 (Munich–Garmisch, exit Wolfratshausen) and the B472 / B23. By train to Steingaden or Peißenberg, then by bus. Parking is available on the outskirts of the village.
Free admission. Catering at association prices — food and drinks go to the association's fund, which finances the traditional costume work (training of youth in traditional costumes and Plattler dances).
