Three Days of Village Life in an Extraordinary State

When the Schützenfest Negenmeerten begins, the pace of life on the Neuschoo village square changes. The quiet East Frisian everyday life turns into a packed weekend, starting with the king's shooting competition on Friday evening, growing into the night with a torchlight procession and tent disco, and reaching its emotional climax on Saturday with the king's retrieval. Sunday concludes the festival with a convivial morning pint and a family-friendly finale.

King's Shooting and Tradition

The king's shooting competition on Friday from 6 p.m. is the contest in which the new majesties – the Schützenkönig (king), Vizekönig (vice-king), and Jugendkönig (youth king) – are chosen. The tradition dates back a long way and is carefully maintained by the Negenmeerten Marksmen's Association. The social significance of a Schützenkönig in an East Frisian village community can hardly be overestimated – the office is equally an honor, a duty, and recognition.

Torchlight Procession, Tent Disco, and Family Program

After the proclamation on Friday, the torchlight procession through Neuschoo forms around 9 p.m., before the tent disco begins around 10 p.m. On Saturday, starting at noon, the new majesties will be picked up in a festive parade; the children's program with games, activities, and small competitions begins at 3 p.m. The event concludes with a joint festival evening in the tent.

Sunday

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, the Schützenfest will conclude with a communal Frühschoppen (morning pint). The club members, families, and friends of the festival will meet once again on the village square before the tent officially closes in the late afternoon and the cleanup begins. This marks the end of the 2026 Schützenfest in the relaxed sociability that is characteristic of East Frisian folk festival culture.
