A World-Class Concert Series
The Festlicher Sommer in der Wies is a concert series that has been running for over 60 years, presenting top-class classical and sacred music concerts. The concert region is the Pfaffenwinkel in Upper Bavaria, with a focus on the UNESCO World Heritage Wieskirche (Pilgrimage Church to the Flagellated Saviour) near Steingaden in the district of Weilheim-Schongau. The supporting association, Förderverein Festlicher Sommer in der Wies e.V., is the organizer.
A Unique Concert Space
Built between 1745 and 1754, the Wieskirche is one of the most important Rococo churches in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. Its light-filled interior and special acoustics make the church an extraordinary concert venue, lending the »Festlicher Sommer« its distinctive character.
Program
The program ranges from early music to grand choral and orchestral works, and organ symphonies. Participants include renowned choirs, orchestras, and soloists, such as members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the choir of the town of Schongau, and youth choirs of the Bavarian Singers' Association. Some concerts are free to attend.
Pfaffenwinkel Region
Nestled in the pre-Alpine landscape of the Pfaffenwinkel, the concert series combines music, architecture, and nature. It is a cultural highlight of the region, attracting music lovers from all over Bavaria and beyond.
