Franconian wine in the romantic courtyard of Gaibach Castle on the Main loop
Gaibach is a district of the town of Volkach in the Kitzingen district, right in the heart of one of Franconia's most famous wine regions, on the Mainschleife (Main loop). Gaibach Castle, with its baroque courtyard and adjoining castle church, is one of the most significant noble residences in Main Franconia, built in the 17th century by the Schönborn family. Once a year, the courtyard opens for the Gaibach Castle Wine Festival – a wine festival that makes the most of its stunning backdrop.
The event is organized by a civil law partnership (GbR) between SC Gaibach (Sports Club) and the Gaibach Volunteer Fire Brigade – two associations that put the festival together entirely on their own initiative. This is reflected in the atmosphere: voluntary, warm, community-focused, with no large-event feel.
The menu features Franconian wines from the surrounding vineyards around Gaibach and Volkach – Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, and Bacchus dominate. Complementing the wine, four food trucks offer guests Franconian specialties, alongside six beverage stands in the courtyard. Around 1,000 visitors attend each evening.
Four bands alternate on the stage in the castle courtyard over the three festival days – covering rock, party music, and Franconian classics. The castle walls reflect the acoustics, creating an atmosphere that no modern wine tent can replicate. Unlike the large commercial wine festivals on the Main loop, the Castle Wine Festival retains a family-friendly feel.
Visitors to the Castle Wine Festival can easily combine their visit with a vineyard hike the following day through the Volkach vineyards or a visit to the pilgrimage church "Maria im Weingarten". The Mainschleife, the striking 180-degree bend of the Main River between Volkach and Sommerach, is one of Franconia's oldest and most important wine-growing areas.
The Gaibach Castle Wine Festival 2026 takes place from August 7th to 9th in the courtyard of Gaibach Castle. Festival starts every evening at 6:00 PM.
In the baroque castle courtyard, Franconian wines from the surrounding vineyards will be served, and four food trucks and six beverage stands will provide guests with Franconian specialties. Four bands will perform on the courtyard stage over the three festival evenings. Around 1,000 visitors attend each evening.
