Hamburg's Festival for Independent Arts
The independent scene – artists, collectives, and groups working independently of state or city theatres – has had a tough time in Hamburg for years. Unlike in Berlin or Cologne, where structures similar to Kampnagel existed early on, Hamburg's independent scene had to fight for visibility over decades. Fringify (formerly Hauptsache Frei!) has been the central showcase for this scene for years.
Motto 2026: "#acutestate"
The 2026 edition is titled "#acutestate" and explores "the simultaneity of escalation and tenderness" – a reflection on the global state between war, climate crisis, polarization, and the simultaneously growing need for intimacy and connection. The festival is divided into four thematic days:
- Thursday, June 4: Europe as a fragile space
- Friday, June 5: Bodies and spaces as fluid structures
- Saturday, June 6: Transformations between intensity and apocalypse
- Sunday, June 7: Narration as a fragmented archival practice
11 Venues Across Hamburg
Fringify is deliberately decentralized: 11 different venues across the city – from Kampnagel and Lichthof to small off-spaces in St. Pauli, Altona, and HafenCity – host the programme. Those who want to see all events will be commuting between Hamburg's districts for four days.
23 Events, Curated from Open Calls
The programme comprises 23 events curated from open calls. The range is intentionally broad: performance, dance, theatre, and music stand side-by-side on equal footing, complemented by lecture-performances, participatory formats, and installations.
Accessibility and Inclusion
A central hallmark of Fringify is its commitment to accessibility: venues are as wheelchair-accessible as possible, with translations, audio description, and sign language considered for many events. Diversity and visibility for marginalized voices are explicitly targeted in the festival concept.
Fringify — edition 2026
From June 4 to 7, 2026, the Fringify Festival will take place. Hosted by Fringify (formerly Hauptsache Frei!), it presents 23 events from Hamburg's and the wider region's independent art scene across 11 venues throughout the city.
The motto "#acutestate" explores the simultaneity of escalation and tenderness – an attempt to artistically respond to the current global state. Four thematic days structure the programme.
