Hamburg's Indie Bookstores Become a Stage
The Lange Nacht der Literatur is Hamburg's annual city-wide reading festival: For over ten hours – from 2 PM in the afternoon until midnight – independent bookstores, antiquarian bookshops, and cultural centers invite you to readings, book premieres, discussions, and performances. A total of around 36 events run in parallel, spread across the entire city. The audience puts together their own evening – with breaks for beer, wine, and changing neighborhoods.
Authors and Topics
Program partners are Hamburg's independent bookstores, each responsible for an author or a discussion in their premises. Invited voices in 2026 include Asal Dardan, Katharina Köller, Saša Stanišić, Christoph Hein, Marica Bodrožić, Kurt Prödel, and Till Raether – a curated mix of current voices in German-language literature, international guests, and authors from Hamburg.
Winding Down From Reading to Dancing
At the end of the night – usually after 11 PM – the festival winds down at a central location: Vom Lesen zum Tanzen (From Reading to Dancing). A party that transitions the reading festival into a night of dancing.
