Hambach Wine Festival along Schloßstraße below Hambach Castle
The Hambacher Schlossfest SchwarzRotGold — also known as "HAMBACHschwarzrotgold" or Schloßstraßenfest — is one of the most important wine festivals in the Palatinate wine village of Hambach. It takes place every year on the second weekend in June; the 2026 edition runs from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14.
The venue is one of the most historically significant places in German history: the Schloßstraße in Hambach, leading up to Hambach Castle — the castle where the famous Hambach Festival took place in 1832, with around 30,000 people demonstrating for German unity and freedom. The black-red-gold flags waved at the time gave the festival its name and are today the colors of the Federal Republic of Germany.
During the festival, the Hambach wineries open their courtyards and cellars along Schloßstraße, serving their wines directly from the premises. Hambach is one of the most renowned Palatinate wine villages with excellent vineyards around the castle hills: Riesling, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), and elegant rosé wines characterize the oenological offerings.
Palatinate specialties complement the festival offerings: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with meat and bread), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), Quetschekuche (plum cake), and other regional classics. The picturesque location along the ascending Schloßstraße, with views of Hambach Castle on the hill and the Rhine plain at the foot of the slope, gives the festival its very special charm.
With its politically charged festival name, the event combines Palatinate wine culture with the democratic history of the place. Unlike the major "1832" democracy festival, organized every two years as a federal presidential event, the SchwarzRotGold festival is an annual, more family-oriented Hambach Volksfest with a clear focus on wine.
The 2026 edition of the Hambacher SchwarzRotGold festival will take place based on the annual rhythm on the second weekend of June, from June 12 to 14. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
