Hamburg Potters' Market in the Gleishalle Oberhafen
The Gleishalle Oberhafen is one of the most beautiful industrial architectures in HafenCity: high ceilings, long glass fronts, the diffused northern light of a former railway hall. This is precisely what makes it the ideal stage for the Fest der Keramik — clay needs light that doesn't scatter it, and the hall provides exactly this character throughout the weekend.
The focus is on around forty exhibiting ceramic artists. The spectrum is deliberately broad: raw stoneware with vibrant firing marks, fine porcelain with a glazed surface, functional everyday ware for kitchen and table, alongside sculptural and experimental works. Those looking for unique pieces can leisurely move between the stands without the typical mass-market stress of a classic pottery market.
Workshop areas and hands-on activities are an integral part. Vessels are created on the pottery wheel in front of the audience — you can watch, ask questions, and in many cases, try it yourself. This proximity between workshop and market distinguishes the Hamburg Ceramics Festival from purely commercial sales fairs.
The Gleishalle is located in the Oberhafen-Quartier, the creative cluster of HafenCity, surrounded by artist studios, film productions, and gastronomy. It's about a fifteen-minute walk from the main train station. Those who combine the weekend with a stroll through the Speicherstadt will experience the full Nordic Hanseatic charm in one outing.
The inaugural 2025 edition attracted a very diverse group of talented ceramic artists from across the state of Hamburg and the North German region. The second edition is underway for 2026 — and thus the real test of whether the Hamburg Potters' Market will become a fixture in the North German ceramics scene.
For the 2026 edition, the doors of the Gleishalle Oberhafen will open on Saturday, September 12th, and Sunday, September 13th, from 10 AM to 6 PM daily. Admission is by voluntary donation.
The complete list of exhibiting ceramic artists and the workshop program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on fest-der-keramik.de. A pottery wheel demonstration and hands-on stations for adults and children are planned again.
The complete artist directory and workshop schedule will be published shortly before the event at fest-der-keramik.de.
