Renaissance Castle as a Medieval Stage
Schloss Trebsen, a Renaissance castle picturesquely situated on the Mulde riverbank, has been one of Saxony's most sought-after medieval venues for years. The Pentecost Knight Tournament takes place every year over the extended Pentecost weekend – three days of programme with tournament fights, market activities, and camp life. In 2026, the spectacle runs from Saturday, May 23rd, to Whit Monday, May 25th.
Knights on Horseback and Robber Knights
The centrepiece is the tournament fights. The mounted knights of the group "Mandshur Tengri" hold their competitions in front of the castle – lance thrusting, sword fighting, and equestrian games in full armour. They are complemented by "Memento Vivere", a group of foot-bound robber knights, who provide rough humour and physical action. Archery tournaments are also on the programme: on Saturday traditionally as target shooting, on Sunday as a hunting tournament. Children can be knighted in their own forge to become "real knights" – if they can recite the knightly virtues completely.
Open Camp with Over 100 Men and Women
Schloss Trebsen is famous for its camp life. Over 100 men and women from various medieval groups pitch their tents on the castle meadow and populate the camp – cooking over open fires, practising archery, demonstrating historical crafts. This authenticity – fabrics, tent structures, tools – is one of the characteristics that set Trebsen apart from many commercial medieval markets.
Market, Music, and Jesters
The castle market stretches around the camp: blacksmiths, leatherworkers, glass bead makers, cloth merchants, herb women, show cooking stations. Medieval music groups wander around playing bagpipes, shawms, and drums. Jesters, fire-eaters, and theatre performances round off the spectacle.
Grimma, Trebsen, and the Mulde
Trebsen/Mulde is a locality of the town of Grimma in the Leipzig district. The romantic location on the Mulde riverbank makes the castle a popular destination – even outside the Pentecost Tournament. Visitors can combine their stay with a visit to the old town of Grimma or a boat trip on the Mulde.
