Traditional family festival at the Romanesque Imperial Cathedral with a program for young and old — Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm
The Imperial Cathedral (Collegiate Church of St. Peter and Paul) was founded from 1135 onwards by Emperor Lothar III as a burial place and memorial church and is one of the outstanding buildings of Romanesque architecture in Germany. With its magnificent Lion Portal, the hunting frieze, and the cloister designed by Italian builders, it is a first-class attraction — and the natural center of the Cathedral Festival.
The Cathedral Festival expressly sees itself as a festival for families. Hands-on activities for children, demonstrations of historical crafts, family tours of the cathedral and cloister, play stations, face painting, and possibly a petting zoo ensure a varied program.
Local clubs, caterers, and market vendors set up stalls around the cathedral. On offer: bratwurst, cakes, coffee, drinks, ice cream, regional specialties, and handicrafts. The proceeds often benefit church and social causes.
Regional choirs, brass ensembles, and solo artists perform on a small stage in the cathedral's surroundings. Special concert or organ moments are possible within the cathedral itself, making the unique acoustics of the building tangible.
Guided tours specifically for the Cathedral Festival are offered, aimed at families and first-time visitors. Topics: history of the cathedral, significance of the architectural sculpture, the person of Emperor Lothar III, and daily life in the collegiate church.
With just under 16,000 inhabitants, Königslutter am Elm is one of the most culturally and historically significant small towns in the Helmstedt region. The Imperial Cathedral, the Geitelder Tor, and the Berggarten make the town a tourist attraction — the Cathedral Festival brings all these strengths visibly together.
The detailed program for 2026, including performing ensembles and stall assignments, will be published by the Imperial Cathedral and the City of Königslutter shortly before the event on koenigslutter.de. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Festival opening at 11 am, market operations throughout the day, stage program in several blocks spread over the day, family program in the afternoon, closing at 6 pm.
