Traditional Maibaumfest on May 1st in the historic town center of Eldagsen
When the sounds of brass music echo through the alleys of Eldagsen on the morning of May 1st, it's Maibaumfest. In this historic district of Springe, the tradition of jointly erecting the Maypole has asserted itself as a central spring event. The clubs, the business association, and numerous helpers erect the decorated pole on the Kirchplatz — usually by hand and under the eyes of a large crowd of spectators.
The erection of the Maypole has its roots far back in pre-Christian spring customs. In Northern Germany — and thus also in Eldagsen — this has developed into a festival that makes the community of the village or district visible. The pole, often a decorated spruce or birch, symbolizes the beginning of the brighter season. The decoration is traditionally done by the local clubs, and the erection is managed together. In Eldagsen, the fire department accompanies the action, and a marching band or music club provides the musical accompaniment.
The Kirchplatz in the historic town center forms the natural stage. Surrounded by half-timbered houses and the Eldagsen church, it creates an atmosphere that pleasantly stands out from large urban May events. Club stands offer drinks and simple food, often supplemented by a small coffee and cake corner. Families use the festival to celebrate the start of May together, former Eldagsen residents return, and day-trippers from the region stop by.
Eldagsen was incorporated into the city of Springe in 1974 as part of the Lower Saxony regional reform, but before that, it was an independent town with town privileges since the Middle Ages. This independent identity continues to shape club life and thus also the festival culture to this day. The Maibaumfest, the Honey Cake Mustard Festival on Pentecost weekend, and other events form a lively framework throughout the year that preserves and makes visible the historic character of the district.
On May 1st, 2026, residents of Eldagsen and guests will gather from 11 AM on the Kirchplatz. The Maypole will be erected by the local clubs, accompanied by musical performances and a small catering service. The festival usually lasts until the early afternoon.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
