An Advent Market in the Mine
Anyone driving down Piesbacher Straße in Düppenweiler on the third Advent weekend will see an unusual sight from afar: a 12-meter-high, brightly lit miner's headframe made of wood, artfully designed as a Bergmannspyramide (miner's pyramid), with slowly rotating figures. Right next to it, the adit entrance to the Historic Düppenweiler Copper Mine opens up. Here, in the entrance area and in front of the adit, the Miners' Winter Market with Mettenschicht has been held for years — one of the most distinctive Advent markets in Saarland.
Mettenschicht — The Spiritual Heart of the Market
The Mettenschicht is a mining tradition that originated in Catholic mining customs: the last shift before Christmas, which ended with a small devotion and a shared meal. In Düppenweiler, this tradition is recreated every Saturday evening of the Winter Market at 5 p.m. — with a devotion, miners' songs, and the traditional "Glück Auf" (Good Luck). It is the only moment in the Saarland Advent calendar where you can experience an authentic mining liturgy live.
The Düppenweiler Copper Mine
The mine was operated as a copper mine in the 18th century — one of the few copper mining areas in Central Europe of this size. After several phases of closure and reopening, it was finally abandoned in the 19th century and is now an industrial monument and visitor mine. Guided tours through the adits with helmets and overalls are possible; the underground chapel of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, is one of the most unusual sacred spaces in Saarland.
The Market
Outside of the Mettenschicht, the Winter Market functions like a small, carefully maintained Advent market: wooden stalls with mulled wine, gingerbread, bratwurst, crêpes, regional honey, Christmas tree decorations, and wood carvings. The atmosphere is warm and focused — the confined space in front of the adit creates an almost intimate mood that many large city markets fail to achieve despite crowds. Catering is provided by local associations; the proceeds go towards the maintenance of the mine facility.
The Miner's Pyramid
The striking landmark is the 12 m high, illuminated miner's pyramid. Like traditional Ore Mountains Christmas pyramids, it consists of several tiers with moving figures — here, however, dedicated to the mining theme: miners with headlamps, mine cages, horse-drawn carts, and St. Barbara as the central figure. The pyramid is considered the largest of its kind in Saarland and is illuminated continuously throughout the weekend.
Merzig-Wadern and the Saargau
Düppenweiler is a district of the municipality of Beckingen in the Merzig-Wadern district. Its location at the transition from the Saar Valley to the Hochwald makes the region one of the most beautiful hiking areas in Saarland. Those extending their Winter Market weekend can visit the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail, the Wolf Park in Merzig-Wadern, or the Saarschleife near Mettlach (35 km).
