Palatinate Traditions with a Wink

Höheinöd in the West Palatinate region preserves a piece of folk tradition with the Kerscheschnitzlerfest that is rarely found elsewhere. The centerpiece is the 'Kerscheschdääweitspauzwettbewerb', a competition where participants spit a cherry stone (Kerscheschdää) as far as possible. What sounds curious at first is actually an old rural summer tradition – cherries ripened in June, the stones were left lying around after eating, so a competition was made out of necessity. The festival honors this down-to-earth form of conviviality with its own discipline and a trophy.

Haus des Bürgers as Festival Center

The venue and festival center is the Haus des Bürgers in Höheinöd. The official festival opening takes place here on Saturday at 5 p.m. The program then unfolds over two days with live music, catering, and the major crowd-pullers: the Kerscheschdääweitspauzwettbewerb on Saturday and an impressive show of historic tractors and vintage agricultural machinery.

Women's Associations and Clubs as Organizers

As is typical for the West Palatinate, the festival is supported by local clubs. Women's associations play a special role, being responsible for coffee and homemade cakes – an important element of Palatinate festival culture. Catering is entirely voluntary, with proceeds going back to local club activities.
