Tips for Your Visit
Come on the eve of the festival for the witches' bonfire – that's the most emotional moment of the celebration. If you're more of a "Frühschoppen" type, arrive around 10:30 AM on May 1st. Bring cash (card payment not possible everywhere) and sturdy shoes – the meadow can be soft after spring rain.
May Tradition in the Haustadt Valley
Erbringen, with its around 900 inhabitants, is one of the most idyllic districts of the municipality of Beckingen in Saarland, and thrives on its active club life. Nestled in the narrow valley of the Mühlenbach, surrounded by forests and scattered fruit orchards along the Saar Cycle Path, the "Golddorf" (golden village) presents itself as a small, picturesque Saarland village – and the May festival on May 1st is one of the central events in the village calendar.
Who Organizes the Festival
The organizers are traditionally the Erbringen district of the Beckingen volunteer fire brigade and the local DRK association. Both clubs have deep roots in the village: the fire brigade celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023, and the DRK has been present in the region for decades with the Erbringen rescue station. The 24 active firefighters under district fire chief Werner Folz lend a hand every year, from setup to the last Kerwen beer.
What to Expect
The May festival is organized in a classic Saarland style: on the eve of May 1st (Witches' Night), the witches' bonfire is lit on the village square, the Maypole is erected, and everyone dances into May together with the clubs, the youth, and the residents. On the May Day holiday itself, the village community meets for a "Frühschoppen" (morning pint), later there is lunch with classic Saarland dishes like "Schwenker" (grilled pork neck) and "Spießbraten" (roast pork on a spit), followed by coffee and cake in the afternoon.
Location and Atmosphere
The venue is the Erwringer Scheier, the converted old bakehouse with the village square in front of it on the Mühlenbach. A charming setting with a stream, a view of the chapel, and the typical Saarland mix of sandstone houses and old farmsteads. Visitors from Saarbrücken, Saarlouis, or Trier will find an authentic May 1st event here without any tourist fuss – pure Saarland, supported by volunteers, with genuine hospitality.
Erbringen Year-Round
For those who want to extend their stay: Erbringen is part of the Biosphere Reserve along the Saar River and is part of the well-signposted Saar-Lückner-Runde. Both the Saar Cycle Path and the towpath run directly past – so a visit to the May festival can be wonderfully combined with a bike tour along the Saar or a hike through the surrounding forests.
