Fair in the Forest

The Pfingstkirmes Oppen — also known as Pfingstkirmes am Lückner — is one of the most distinctive folk events in the Merzig-Wadern district. Unlike most Saarland fairs, it doesn't take place on a festival ground in the village, but in the Lückner forest area on the edge of the Oppen district. A tradition that, according to the municipality of Beckingen, can be called "almost legendary".

Whit Monday in Lückner

The Pfingstkirmes is held on Whit Monday — in 2026, that falls on June 1st. The Oppen Volunteer Fire Brigade is responsible for the catering: a refreshment stand with draft beer, bratwurst from a charcoal grill, simple snacks, plus coffee and cake. Live music accompanies the day, which runs from morning until evening.

Oppen — Village with Festival Culture

With just under 950 inhabitants, Oppen is one of the smaller districts of the municipality of Beckingen. The municipal website describes the people of Oppen as "cheerful and committed" individuals who know how to celebrate. The Pfingstkirmes in Lückner is, alongside the "Grün-Weiße Nacht" (Green-White Night) on Carnival weekend, the social highlight of Oppen's year.

Location on the Schwarzwälder Hochwald

The Lückner forest area is located on the edge of the Schwarzwälder Hochwald, one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Saarland. The combination of fair-forest-Pentecost gives the festival a special character — many visitors arrive on foot through the forest, turning their visit to the fair into an extended Pentecost excursion.
