The largest Volksfest on the Ostalb — Festival parade, brilliant fireworks, 200 market traders, and ~300,000 visitors under the Ipf
The Ipfmesse is the largest and most traditional Volksfest on the Ostalb (eastern part of the Swabian Jura). With around 300,000 visitors annually, it surpasses all other Volksfeste in the region and has proven itself for about 200 years as the central summer event in Bopfingen. The organizer is the City of Bopfingen — a small town with around 12,000 inhabitants in the Ostalb district, located at the transition to the Bavarian border (Nördlinger Ries).
The venue is the fairground in Jahnstraße in Bopfingen — directly beneath the town's striking landmark, the Ipf (668 m). The Ipf is a table mountain of the Swabian Jura that dramatically rises from the landscape and was settled as a princely seat since the Iron Age (today a Celtic open-air museum on the summit). The Volksfest under the Ipf thus has a unique backdrop — beer tent towers and funfair lights are reflected against the prehistoric mountain massif.
The Ipfmesse runs for five days and combines various program elements: Funfair with modern rides (roller coaster, Ferris wheel, bumper cars), beer tent and wine garden with brass band music and live band program, large trade exhibition with regional companies, market with approx. 200 traders in the avenues around the fairground, agricultural exhibition with machinery and equipment. Highlights: the grand festival parade (traditionally on Sunday) with floats, traditional costume groups, and music bands from the entire region, as well as the brilliant fireworks (grand finale fireworks on the last day of the festival).
Bopfingen is located at the transition between the Swabian Jura (Baden-Württemberg) and the Nördlinger Ries (Bavaria) — a cultural and landscape border region. Historically, the town was an Imperial Free City in the Swabian League, later part of Württemberg. The Ipfmesse brings together visitors from the entire Ostalb district, the Donau-Ries district (Bavaria), and the Frankenhöhe. For the region, the fair is an identity-forming event — five days during which Bopfingen attracts the entire attention of the Ostalb.
The five festival days in 2026 follow the established choreography of the Ipfmesse. The fairground on Jahnstraße will be the culinary center with the local brewery's beer tent and the wine garden; surrounding them are the showmen and market traders in the avenues — about 200 stalls offering clothing, household goods, sweets, toys, and traditional Volksfest items. The trade exhibition showcases regional companies, and the agricultural exhibition displays tractors and machinery.
Admission to the fairground is free. Rides: approx. €3–5 per ride, family rates on some days. Beer tent: 1 liter approx. €11–13, chicken €12–15. Market stalls have their own pricing.
By train to Bopfingen station (Riesbahn Aalen–Donauwörth), then a 5-minute walk to the fairground. By car via the B 29 (Aalen–Nördlingen) or the A 7, exit Aalen/Westhausen. Festival parking lots are signposted.
July 3rd to 7th, 2026, daily from morning until midnight (fairground and market). Beer tent and funfair with extended opening hours. Festival parade traditionally on Sunday afternoon, brilliant fireworks on the last evening of the festival.
Admission to the fairground is free. Rides and refreshments are paid for directly on site.
