Wine against a World Heritage Backdrop
The Royal Wine Festival Potsdam is one of the most atmospherically impressive wine festivals in Germany. The venue is the Royal Vineyard on Klausberg — a historic terraced vineyard below the Belvedere on Klausberg, right in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Potsdam's Palaces and Parks. Tasting a Riesling here among the vines, you gaze upon one of Prussia's most beautiful architectural ensembles. The 14th edition runs from July 10th to 12th, 2026.
Frederick the Great and His Rediscovery
The Royal Vineyard dates back to Frederick the Great: The king had terraces laid out here starting in 1769 and cultivated wine for the court's needs. After neglect in the 19th century, the site was forgotten until an initiative to recultivate began in 2003, uncovering the terraces and planting new vines. Today, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Solaris, Saphira, Souvignier Gris, and other climate-adapted varieties grow on the Klausberg. The proceeds from the wine festival go entirely to the maintenance and care of this historic vineyard — buying a glass of wine directly supports the World Heritage site.
Three Days of Events in 2026
The event days have different characters. Friday, July 10th, 6–10 PM is an elegant opening evening — smaller crowds, perfect for relaxed tastings with live music. Saturday, July 11th, 2–10 PM is the busiest day, with Baroque scenes — actors in period costumes guide you through the vineyard, sharing anecdotes from the Frederician era. Sunday, July 12th, 11 AM–5 PM begins with a sparkling wine brunch and concert; the festival winds down in a relaxed manner in the afternoon.
Winemakers from All Over Germany
For the 14th edition, the association invites winemakers from Germany's major wine-growing regions — from the Mosel to the Rheingau, Pfalz, and Württemberg, as well as winemakers from Saxony and Brandenburg. Focus in 2026: the northern and central German wine regions (Saale-Unstrut, Saxony, Werderaner Wachtelberg). The Königlicher Weinberg winery itself will present the new vintage on Saturday in a limited edition — the number of bottles is small, and they sell out quickly at the stand.
German Wine Queen and Aroma Journey
A highlight of many editions is the appearance of the German Wine Queen, who invites guests on an "Aroma Journey" through various wineries — a guided tasting where the reigning queen explains the characteristics of the wines. For wine lovers, this is a rare chance to taste wine directly from the German Wine Queen.
Potsdam, Klausberg, and the Belvedere
The Belvedere on Klausberg is located in the northern part of Sanssouci Park, above Sanssouci Allee. Built from 1770–1772 according to plans by Georg Christian Unger, it is one of the most elegant sight buildings of Frederician architecture. The vineyard lies directly below the viewing terrace — the site is part of the World Heritage of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.
