25 Years of Erfurter Drachenboot Cup

The Erfurter Drachenboot Cup is the largest dragon boat race in Thuringia and has been a firm fixture in the Thuringian water sports calendar since 2002. The organizer is Club Maritim Erfurt, which has used the lake as its home base since the club was founded. 2026 marks the 25th anniversary edition — a quarter of a century of dragon boat racing in Erfurt.

18th Sparkassen-Schüler-Drachenbootcup

Parallel to the main race, the 18th Sparkassen-Schüler-Drachenbootcup takes place, a separate competition for junior teams from schools, youth groups, and clubs. This format has become one of the most important school water sports events in Central Germany, attracting hundreds of young paddlers to Alperstedter See every year.

Alperstedter See — Erfurter Seen Active Region

The Alperstedter See is part of the Erfurter Seen active region — a network of former open-cast lignite mine lakes northwest of Erfurt. With its clear water, wide shorelines, and stable wind conditions, it is ideal for dragon boat races. Club Maritim Erfurt also offers canoeing, sailing, and triathlon training at the lake. Directions: A71 exit Erfurt-Stotternheim, then L2155.

Dragon Boat — A 2000-Year Tradition

Dragon boat racing has its roots in China over 2000 years ago — today it is a popular water sport worldwide. A dragon boat is 12 m long, accommodates 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a helm. The Erfurt Cup format features 200-meter sprints and 500-meter distances with fun classes, pro teams, and school classes — a broadly based sports event for very different target groups.
